Reconstruction works have started at the new Ikos Resort in Kallithea, Kassandra, where the former Athos Palace and Pallini Beach hotels are being transformed for the Sani/Ikos Group. Penelis Consulting Engineers is responsible for the complete structural redesign of the resort and for the strengthening of its two landmark reinforced-concrete towers.

The first phase concentrates on the two towers. The heavy existing balconies and vaulted façade elements are being removed by vibration-free diamond wire and wall-saw cutting: each element is cut into segments and lifted away by crane, protecting the existing structure from impact and vibration. Removing these elements substantially reduces the mass of the buildings – and with it their seismic demand – before the strengthening works with shotcrete jackets, FRP laminates and new lightweight balconies begin.
